James' project, joint with Claire Vallance (Oxford), combines theoretical and experimental aspects. He is currently focusing on pump-probe experiments, and thinking about the calculation of experimental variables from theoretical calculations.
James travelled a long way from home to go to University - just under 15 miles. He received a MChem degree from University College here in Oxford, performing a Part II project with Michael Burt on the analysis of Coulomb explosion imaging experiments. James has long been interested by experiments at free-electron lasers, spending not one but two occasions at the DESY compound in Hamburg. When not getting excited about experiments involving wiggling electrons, James likes to sing, play chess, and learn languages.
